Emergency’s – 112

For Police, Fire, Ambulance, Coast Guard or Life Guard call 112. English speaking operators are ALWAYS available. Just call and say “English”, or better still, say “Habla Inglés”, then you will be put on hold for a very short time and be put through to an English speaking operator. Before you call this number, you need to know that these operators are NOT local. When you speak to them you need to give them as much information about your location as you can. You may be speaking from Torrevieja but the operator could be based in Madrid or another location.

Look for street names, building and shop names, telephone numbers, GPS locations, in fact anything that might assist your operator in identifying where you are. On motorways, it is always better to use the emergency telephones on the roadside, as they instantly identify your location. Better stil, try to identify these locations when ever you go to somewhere new, so you will always be prepared.

You can call this number from any land-line or mobile – even a mobile that is locked or has no credit. 112 is the international standard number for emergancy help. In the UK you might know 999, but 112 is set to replace 999, once people become more aware of it.
