WHEN TO THROW YOUR PRUNINGS
![]()
A lot of action and negotiation took place on the run up to Christmas to avoid industrial action by street cleaning and refuse staff in Orihuela and on the Costa, but the successful avoidance of a strike does not mean that the situation is resolved.
There are lots of deep issues surrounding the award of the contract for waste disposal, which have included court action, disagreement and lots of time spent by town hall representative in the hope of resolving more than just the ill feeling of those on the front line. Now, the situation is stable, but neither side are happy with the contract as it stands and are waiting on legal intervention to resolve the matter fully.
In the meantime, the contractor involved is operating at a “work to rule” state, which means that only the minimum of service is being provided to the residents of the municipality, albeit this is keeping the streets clean and the dustbins emptied in the main.
It is equally important that we all do our bit to try to keep our environment clean, tidy and aesthetically pleasing. It is of course us as individuals who are responsible for litter, or for placing waste on the street in the hope it will be collected by either “bin rooters” or the council cleaners.
The town hall, on behalf of everybody who lives in the area, are simply asking for a little cooperation during these trying times, not for their benefit, but for the benefit of those residents who may have to look out over streets filled with waste washing machines, television, furniture and garden waste.
The municipality do offer an eco park where goods can be recycled and they even offer a collection facility, but this collection is timetabled and, as part of the work to rule, will only operate at the times stated.
Garden waste will be collected from all areas, but must be bagged and placed outside no more than 24 hours before collection days, thus keeping the streets cleaner.
There is a handy trilingual booklet available from the Town Hall and from the websitewww.orihuela.es, look for the link “Aseo urbano” and then the article named “Ecoparques” and you can download it from there. We have also included the timetable on this page.
If you have any doubts about waste disposal or collection, the Town Hall are there to help you. You can just pop in and ask the questions, picking up your booklet and they will be more than pleased that you too are taking responsibility for the area you live and are doing your bit to bring back the pride in the Orihuela Costa.
