FEARS FOR SUMMER WATER SHORTAGE

After a particularly mild winter, concerns are already being raised over a lack of water that is being stored to serve the Vega Baja area in the summer months. Recently, as the river runs through the city or Orihuela, water levels were low enough to reveal the debris laid at the bottom of the normally hidden bed.

Currently, the Segura Basin holds 56% of its capacity, with 638 hectometres, 122 hectometres less than it held at the same time last year. The quantity of rainfall has reduced over the last five years, prompting concerns that the situation may get worse if the long term future weather remains as mild.

SHOPLIFTING GANG ARRESTED

Officers from the National Police have arrested three women and two men in Elche, all of Romanian origin, accused of stealing clothing from stores by hiding it in bags shielded by tin foil to prevent security systems from being alerted.

Security staff at a shopping centre alerted the police who managed to stop a vehicle with the suspects on board. Clothing with security tags and the foil lined bags were found in their possession and they were found to have previous history of similar activities.

ORIHUELA UNEMPLOYMENT DROPS

Orihuela seems to be bucking the trend in unemployment, with a reduction on 15 people in December, new figures released by the town hall reveal.

Although the figures may seem trivial, unemployment in other areas in the region is still increasing, so even the most minimal change is significant in indicating how confidence in the area is improving and how the future or the residents of the city and surrounding areas improves.

SERIOUS INJURIES FROM HEAD-ON CRASH

Two people have been seriously injured in a head on crash between two cars on the CV-851 in Vereda de Sendres, near Elche.

The circumstances surrounding the incident are still being investigated to try to ascertain how the two vehicles impacted, causing serious injuries to an occupant from each of the vehicles involved.

BABY DEATH BEING INVESTIGATED

Although information has been restricted, the courts of Orihuela are currently investigating the death of a newborn baby, believed to have been born by a 13 year old girl in the city.

The death was discovered early this month and is now the proceedings of court number 3 in Orihuela.
