PROPERTY DEVELOPER DIES
José Luis Serna Almodóvar, one of the most influential property developers who helped to put Torrevieja and the Vega Baja on the map, has died at the age of 75.
Married with 5 children, Almodóvar was the president of the TM Real Estate Group and was renowned for being a “man of the people”, choosing track suits over tailoring and walks through Torrevieja to a mansion lifestyle. His funeral takes place on Tuesday in Torrevieja.
DRAMATIC FIRE RESCUE IN ALICANTE
A young mother and her two young children have been rescued from a fire in an apartment block in Alicante.
A masked man entered the woman´s home on Monday and proceeded to tie her hands and legs together. The attacker fled and the woman managed to “hobble” into another room where her children, aged 7 an 18 months, were sleeping. She then smelt fire and managed to summon the emergency services by telephone and by calling to her neighbours from a window of her first floor apartment.
The woman and her husband have both filed complaints against the husband´s brother, who they said is "obsessed" with her and is under the control of a restraining order. An investigation into the cause of the fire is also being investigated.
ELECTRICITY THIEVES CUT OFF
In a joint operation between the Guardia Civil and electricity supply company Iberdrola, the illegally obtained supply of power to an as yet unknown number of homes has been cut off in locations across Orihuela, Bigastro and Benejúzar.
It is believed that the residents have been obtaining power from the mains supply for some years, using connections that they had made themselves and without monitoring or paying for the electricity used. The power company had said that it was a difficult theft to detect, but their engineers are now in a better position to identify illegal power drains.
TOURIST SPENDING INCREASES
Foreign tourists spent 4.565 million euro in the Valencia region in 2011, 8.6% more than last year, according to data collated by Egatur.
This growth is above the national average of 7.9%, representing a total expenditure by foreign tourists in Spain of 52,800 million euro, which is the best result in history.
Prior to last year, the best results for revenue had been in 2008, with 51,900 million euro, and 2007, with about 50,000 million euro being spent, according to data compiled by the Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism.
SOCIAL FOOD BANK FOR CALPE
The social welfare department of Calpe town council has announced the launch of a food bank which will help needy families who are struggling to buy food during the current financial crisis.
A total of 30,000 euro has been set aside for initial aid towards 180 families who have suffered unemployment and subsequent financial difficulties.
