FORMER PRESIDENT ACQUITTED

The former President of the Valencia community, Francisco Camps, was acquitted by the supreme court, after spending weeks on trial accused of receiving bribes. The case was brought after it was alleged that he had received gifts in line with other cases being investigated under the so called Gürtel case. He was found not guilty by five votes to four.

Judge Juan Climent had to order members of the public to leave the courtroom in the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de la Comunitat Valenciana (TSJCV), as they were causing a disturbance in the court as the verdict was being read out.

POPULATION BOOM IN TORREVIEJA

The city of Torrevieja is boasting the fact that the population of the city increased by five times in the last twenty years.

The latest census figures reveal that the number of people registered as resident of the city stands at 105,270 inhabitants. In total, there are 55,911 residents of foreign nationality, which equates to more than half at 53.1%, whereas there are 49,359 native Spanish residents, though not all of local origin, which accounts for 46.9%.

SCHOOL PROTESTS CONTINUE

Around 200 high school students took to the streets of Torrevieja on Wednesday, waving banners and shouting slogans and marching to the town hall, where they stayed for more than 2 hours protesting against cuts in the education system.

Meanwhile, Alicante is all set for one of the biggest protests to hit the city on Thursday evening, when tens of thousands of people are expected to carry on the protest in support for public education.

PORK PARTY ILLEGAL

The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja has criticized last weekend´s “feast of pork” party in La Mata, claiming that the public event, which was supported by the town hall, failed to apply and have granted the correct licenses for the public event.

The groups states that this attitude qualifies as "insubordination" in compliance with the Coastal Act and its regulations, which has "characterized" the management of Partido Popular in the City Council in recent years.

CIVIL WAR BOMB DEACTIVATED IN ALICANTE

Navy divers carried out a controlled explosion on a bomb that was found in the port of Alicante on Wednesday.

Believed to have posed a threat to ships, the left over civil war device was taken to a safe area and was detonated in the sea, at a depth of around 15 metres, so as to minimise damage.
