JAVEA LIBRARY GIVES WELCOME TO NEWBORNS
Javea. Wednesday, 18th January 2012. The Municipal Library of Javea welcomed all the babies born in 2011 to the world of reading in a ceremony held on Thursday evening at six o'clock, to which all the residents of the municipality who became parents last year were invited.
At this meeting, early childhood educators explained to the parents the importance of reading to their children and tried to convince them of their vital role in initiating and encouraging their children into an activity that combines culture and pleasure. According to the librarian, Catalina Cardona, in addition to opening the doors of the library, parents were given recommendations, both on books as well as on how to instill love for books. Furthermore, the Municipal Library gave the parents a free book to read to their children.
The campaign to encourage reading,“Benvinguts a la Lectura” (Welcome to Reading) has been carried out since 2006 in collaboration with the Regional Department of Education, which selected the Javea library as the pilot project aimed at early initiation of children into literature. Since then, there have been over 200 young children who possess a library card.
Storytelling
In addition to the meeting with the parents of newborns to encourage reading to their children, the Department of Education, has organised further activities aimed at promoting reading in children. Last week they arranged for a storyteller to visit the 1st and 2nd year primary school students of the different schools in the municipality.
