TORREVIEJA CAROL SERVICE ATTRACTS 2,000

FRIDAY'S ninth International Carol service in Torrevieja was blessed both by mild weather and more than 2,000 residents, mainly of British, Irish or Scandinavian descent, who showed up in festive costumes and fine voice for the traditional singing of carols.
This year the Town Hall was represented by the mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolon, Councillor for Foreigners, Rosario Martinez, Councillor for Tourism and Culture, Luis Maria Pizana and Councillor for Fiestas and Festivals, Lola Sanchez Roca.
More than 2,000 torrevejenses gathered at the front door of the Church of the Immaculate Conception to sing a few of the most famous English carols, along with a couple of Spanish songs and a rendering of White Christmas and Jingle Bells to help raise the spirits. The music concert was performed by the ‘Phoenix Concert Band' formed by British musicians who are mainly retired and living in Torrevieja with the numbers swelled by musicians from Just Brass, who together provided an excellent atmosphere for the event.
The massed International choir was made up of more than 100 singers, from the British Isles and Scandinavia, who led the singing for the assembly. This year the event attracted two new groups, a choir made up of Scandinavian residents who are members of Club Nordico and the Torrevieja Show Group, plus participation from the Rascals, Cantabile, Torrevieja Harmonisers and others.
This year, the Spanish songs were led, as MC Bill Singleton would let us believe, by the Salt City Harmonisers, made up of Eduardo, Luisma, Rosario and Lola, helped out by Graham Knight, Director of the Foreign Residents Office, who himself used to sing with the Torrevieja Harmonisers!
This year, members from Rascals worked the crowd and did a little fundraising, with the entire collection going towards the great work done by this year's winners of the prestigious Diego Ramirez Award, the NGO, Alimentos Solidarios, who do a sterling job in providing food and meals for more than 150 needy family on a daily basis.
Bill Singleton also reminded all those present that next year, 2012 will mark the tenth anniversary of the International Carol service, which has grown from a gather of about 50 people to over 2,000, and so they are looking for a few new ideas to make the event a little different. All ideas can be dropped off with Graham Knight in his office opposite the Town Hall.
