REFUSE STRIKE CALLED OFF

It seems that the refuse collection strike planned for Friday by over 120 members of the UTE (Union Temporal de Empresas) is now off following the surprise decision by the company Urbaser to pay the outstanding salaries of its employees.
In a strongly worded letter sent by Pablo Vidal to the company, the Orihuela Councillor responsible for street cleaning warned that the strike was a serious breach of the contract and one more reason to recommend both its cancellation and a subsequent claim for compensation.
This followed a meeting held yesterday morning by the mayor, Monserrate Guillén, with representatives of the Urbaser company in his office.
It would appear that there are still some serious differences to be settled between management and employees within the company concerned including the payment of an additional 400 euro Christmas bonus. Cllr Vidal said that discussions must take place at the earliest opportunity or the future of the contract could be in serious jeopardy.
