ORIHUELA GARBAGE STRIKE CALLED OFF

A previous protest

Rubbish collectors and street cleaners across the Orihuela municipality have called off their threatened strike action, due to start at midnight tonight, after lengthy negotiations throughout the day.

The town hall has been instrumental in trying to ensure that the workers received their outstanding pay, and it has now been agreed that the town hall will advance 185,000 euro to the company to ensure that both the wages and Christmas bonuses will be met.

Despite assurances that wages would be paid in full, the threat of strike still loomed as workers were insistent that this was not acceptable and they held out for the guarantees of extra pay for Christmas, a luxury not afforded to most workers. They will now receive their pay by the 23rd December.
