ALICANTE TRAIN STATION TO GO BACK IN TIME
An agreement has now been reached that will see the façade of Alicante train station renovated to the neoclassical state that was originally built in 1858, but demolished in 1968.
The announcement has come as part of the package that will welcome the AVE high speed train to the city, although the reconstruction work is likely to be delayed until 2013.
Most of the current structure and facia will be retained, albeit hidden behind the newly constructed renovated front.
GREENS WANT CAMPS DISOWNED
The Los Verdes green party of Torrevieja has filed a complaint with the municipal registrar to have the title of “Adopted Son of Torrevieja” withdrawn from the former President of Valencia, Francisco Camps.
Camps is currently in court on charges of corruption, which the greens feel is the “worst scourge of Spanish democracy” and that “a city like Torrevieja cannot be associated with characters who can identify with this phenomenon”.
WATER SHOOTS UP IN SAN MIGUEL
Residents in parts of San Miguel will see the cost of water increase by 421% in the New Year, as the supply contract for portable water systems is taken over by a new company.
The news has come from a neighbourhood association in the town who state that the cost of 20 cubic metres will be over 50 euro, whereas it currently on costs 14 euro.
LEGALITY OF TAXIS TO BE CHECKED
The Agencia Valenciana de la Movilidad (aVM) will be liaising with taxi associations across the entire region in January, to coordinate and control legality within the taxi sector.
None compliance with the legislation relating to taxis are punishable by a warning or fine of up to 1,000 euro for minor offenses, more serious offences will see fines of between 1,001 and 2,000 euro and very serious violations will result in fines of between 2,001 and 6,000 euro.
Meanwhile, one association of drivers announced that a protest will take place in the second half of the month against the lack of action taken so far against an increasing number of illegal operators.
GRAPE NEWS FOR GROWERS
Grape growers in the area have announced that they have sold 48 million kilos of grapes in the last quarter of this year, 2 million of which are in the run up to the New Year tradition of swallowing the fruit whole in time with the chimes of the midnight clock.
Around 35% of the entire crop has been exported, mostly to France, Germany, Switzerland and Portugal. The grapes are said to be of “high quality” this year, due to the favourable weather conditions across the peninsula.
