DRUNK DRIVER KILLS 30 YEAR OLD MOTORCYCLIST

The scene in Elche

Perhaps not unlike many young men, 30 year old José Luis Palazón was a keen practitioner in cultural hobbies like ballroom dancing, karate as well as using computers, as well as a fan of the theatre and due to perform on stage in a matter of weeks.

Described by his friends as "always optimistic, cheerful and with a great sense of humour", and "a great person”, dedicated to his life, his hobbies, his family and his friends.

But, on Tuesday of this week, his body will be laid to rest, a tragedy for everyone who knew him, so energetic and bold, so vibrant and now, taken away at such a young age.

Whilst riding on his motorbike in Elche, a car went through the red lights at a junction, crashing into José Luis and killing him at the scene. Emergency services were called, but could do nothing but confirm his death at the roadside, a death in the hands of the motorist who took his like, jumping the red light.

The driver of the car was arrested, having tested positive for alcohol.

The courts will now decide how to punish the drunk driver, but whatever their actions it will never replace what was taken away.

The Guardia Civil has already increased checks on alcohol and road safety, a campaign which is set to increase on the run up to Christmas and the New Year.

Although we might not shoulder the burden of responsibility on this occasion, we do carry the burden of responsibility and knowledge that this tragic incident could most likely have been avoided and a tragic life not ended so suddenly.

The advice is to never drink and drive, as even the smallest amount of alcohol can affect our ability. Those who push the boundaries should note that the alcohol limit in Spain is lower that the UK and it is like that for a reason. If you are going out, the taxi network is very efficient, or a nominated driver is an alternative, but please, don´t run the roulette wheel as next time, it might be you.
