SOLICITORS DEMAND PAYMENT FOR LEGAL AID

The demo was led by the President of the Valencian Council of Lawyers

Hundreds of lawyers protested outside the Palace of Justice in Alicante on Tuesday, demanding payment of over 4 million euros for services provided by them to the courts.

The debts are due to in excess of 1200 solicitors of which there were over 350 that took part in the demonstration

Led by the President of the Valencian Council of Lawyers, Maria del Carmen Perez, and all the Deans of law schools from within the province, Alicante, Elche, Orihuela-Alcoy, they said their claims relate only to legal services provided by them for work carried out in 2011 and that payment of such dues was the very least they could expect "For a decent turn of justice," the slogan that was prominently displayed throughout the protest.

The Dean of the Provincial Bar College in Alicante, Mariano Caballero, recalled that last year more than 300,000 citizens were represented by lawyers in Valencia and said that the Government had paid only a portion of fees due from the first quarter of 2011. By this stage of the year he said that payments should have been made to the end of the 3rd quarter at the very least and this was not the case at present.

The budget announced by the Ministry of Justice for 2012 is 18,560,000 euros in the Community of Alicante, an amount, he says, that does not correspond to reality. "The turnover in 2010 waw about 24 million euros, and in 2011 it will be about 26 million," he said
