NIGHT RUN FOR SOLIDARITY

The Spanish and the British seem to have a different angle on fundraising. For the most part, in Spain large corporations help fund many enterprises but on a local level they have yet to embrace the idea of charity shops and regular charity drives. However, make something fun and involve families and kids and out they come in their droves. Such was the case on Friday night when a fun run was held from the Paseo Vista Alegre to Pizza 1, along the seafront in Torrevieja.

For a donation of just €3.00, almost four hundred people turned out on a beautiful mild November evening to support the UMT and Red Cross. From babies in push chairs to those in their eighties to the wheelchair bound and disabled, all turned out to support the VII Solidarity Night Race sponsored by the Department of Sports in collaboration with NGOs and the departments of Culture and the Pizzeria No. 1, at Playa del Cura. This year, all profits went to Torrevieja's Red Cross.

Even though it's now in its seventh year, ‘yours truly' seemed to be the only runner born outside of Spain so hopefully next year a few more expatriates will participate in the event. For the small donation, each runner received a T-shirt and number at the start and upon finishing was presented with a slice of pizza, cold drink, pastries and a chance to win one of the sports lottery prizes which included footballs, handballs, basketballs, rucksacks and shoe bags for the lucky winners. Not bad value for money at all.

The director of Pizzeria No.1, Salvatore Squinello was on hand to make sure everyone was fed and watered and was on ‘stage' with Councillor for Sports and Education Daniel Plaza, Councillor of NGOs, Carmen Mateo, president of Torrevieja Musical Union (UMT) José Miguel Toro and representatives from the Local Red Cross who work in the centre and to help with the prize giving ceremony.
