GUARDAMAR DUNES GET CASH GRANT

The Ministry of the Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs has awarded a grant of 386,000 euro for an ecosystem restoration project in Guardamar, that will compliment the work already done in protecting the are flora and fauna in this particularly delicate area.

The grant will cover work between Playa de Babilonia, which has featured in the news because of the fishermen´s cottages falling into the sea, and mouth of the River Segura.

DESALINATION PLANT TERMS APROVED

After a wait of 31 months, the Generalitat Valenciana has finally sent the terms and conditions for the Torrevieja desalination plant to operate, to the company Acuamed.

The process of authorising the use of the new plant began in 2007. This latest document is said to be the last piece in the puzzle that will allow the second largest desalination plant in the world to work, producing 80 cubic hectometres a year with the capacity to irrigate 8,000 hectares and provide drinking water to 440,000 people at the same time, after an investment of 297 million euro.

CANCER SURVIVOR GETS ON HIS BIKE

Torrevieja cancer survivor Daniel Orenes has set off on a world tour that will take six years to complete, as he circumnavigates the globe on his push bike.

After undergoing chemotherapy treatment for over a year and beating the disease, he said "I value life more," despite the, "difficult times".

The Torrevieja hospital presented him with an emergency medical kit before he left, offering help and advice, should he suffer any minor injuries on his way.

BATS OFFERED PROTECTION

Thirty bats, who are residents of the Cova Juliana near Alcoy, have been fitted with monitoring devices to enable the environmental department to monitor if they are at risk.

Action has already been taken in order to protect them, including using low density, orange street lights, the installation of wildlife crossings and a covered tunnel to allow them to safely cross the road, warning sound systems and protective nets, but concerns are still being raised as to the damage that may be done to the creatures.

The electronic devices will enable scientists to constantly monitor the success of their protective actions.

SPEEDING REVENUE INCREASE

The city council of Alicante have announced that they have raised 137,000 euro so far this year, which has come from voluntary payments of speeding fines in the city.

Fines have ranged from between 100 and 600 euro, but all have been at a discounted rate for prompt payment.
