DEDICATION FOR MURDERED NOTARY
The city council of Torrevieja have tabled a notion to name a street in the city after Juan José Martínez Román, the well known and popular Notary who was gunned down in a botched robbery in his office in 2009.
The murder caused outrage in the city, firstly because of the brutality in the crime, then by the suggested lack of correct investigation to find the perpetrator, amid claims that the wrong person was arrested for the crime.
It is hoped that the plan will be agreed by all political parties and will serve as a permanent memorial in the city.
BIRDS ON DISPLAY
A display of 700 birds is taking place at the headquarters of the Asociación Grupo Salinas de Torrevieja until Sunday this week, showcasing the birds that have competed in the 14th annual contest organised by the ornithological association.
Trophies and prizes will be awarded to birds in categories such as colour and singing. The awards ceremony will be held on Saturday at the Rincón de Capis restaurant.
VOYEURISTIC THIEF ARRESTED
The police have detained a man accused of theft by violence after a number of incidents at a “meeting point” in Moncayo, near Guardamar.
Officers report that the location is often used by people wishing to engage in sexual encounters and that the perpetrator would watch them with binoculars, then rob unsuspecting victims using threats of violence with a large screwdriver and rocks.
Three separate incidents are known by the police, but they suspect more crimes had been committed, but the victims were reluctant to report the incidents in view of the activities known to go on.
HUGE INTEREST IN POLICE RECRUITMENT
The city council of Orihuela have been astounded by having received nearly 1,700 applicants to fill the roles of 21 local police officers.
Following initial rejections for various reasons, this now leaves 78 people competing in each of the 21 posts.

SLEEPING TROUBLES
