HEAVY RAINS DAMAGE TILED ORIHUELA CREST

The recent heavy rain fall that has plagued the entire Costa Blanca, has caused considerable damage to one of Orihuela´s most icon scenes.

On the banks of the Rio Segura, as it runs through the city, many a tourist and resident have photographed the ceramic tiled depiction of the city´s crest, but can now only see smashed and broken tiles as a result of the natural damage.

The tiled surface was introduced in the early 90´s in order to provide a smooth flow of water and prevent a build up of deposits that caused a bad smell to be emitted from the waterway.

TORREVIEJA MAYOR UNDER FIRE

The mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, has come under more fire this week, after it was revealed that his cousin was awarded work contracts on the same day he graduated, and that a total of 15 contracts have been awarded to his family member, without the correct tender process being initiated, to the value of over 377,000 euro, one of which is yet to be completed.

An emergency meeting was called by the green Los Verdes party in an attempt to get answers as to why this situation has occurred, but the meeting was adjourned pending a brief investigation into the facts, although the representatives of the ruling party state that there is no cause for concern.

BLUE LAGOON TO GET WATER

Works to supply drinking water to the residents of Blue Lagoon have finally been approved by the municipal council. The work, at a cost of nearly half a million euro, will link the urbanisation with the desalination network and provide fresh drinking water to residents who have relied on bottles and wells since 2004, due to the contamination of the current supply.

The budget and work is sufficient to rectify the entire network and has already been awarded to the service supplier.

NEW COURTS ANNOUNCED

The Minister for Justice and Social Welfare, Jorge Cabré, has announced an immediate investment of 1.5 million euro, for the creation of 5 new courts in the area at Lliria, Massamagrell, Novelda, Torrevieja and Orihuela.

The announcement has been made due to the increased strain on the legal system and the first one could be operational before the end of the year, with the others quickly following in the first quarter of 2012, with the exception of the most complex one at Torrevieja, which would open in the first half of the year.

BURGLING MAID ARRESTED

Police officers in Murcia have arrested a 43 year old Spanish woman, accused of crimes of burglary against at least five properties where she worked as a maid.

Grabbing jewellery and cash from the homes, the woman netted around 6,000 euro worth of goods. There were no signs of forced entry into the homes, but some of the owners saw their possessions for sale in local gold stores.
