COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

COUNTRY BOWLS CLUB STRUCK BY LIGHTNING

In the early hours of Monday 21st November, while we were all tucked up in our beds listening to the great thunderstorm raging outside, little did we know just how close to home it really was.

In the morning everything seemed relatively calm as our Captain went to assess the green in readiness for our SABA fixture, what a shock when he saw that the club had been struck by lightning. The roof of our covered seating area, just outside the bar had suffered a direct hit delivering devastation to everything in its path. If you ever wondered about the force of a lightning strike... well I can tell you now, it is frightening, as in a split second everything within that area just went into meltdown.

The Restaurant Management of Dave Hughes and his wife Karen who were spending the night in a Chalet the other side of the courtyard were awoken about 5.30 am to the claps of the thunder but didn't know exactly what had happened until Dave went outside at about 8.00 am. They were certainly a very lucky couple and when I think of all the times we have sat in that same area during previous storms it makes one wonder will we ever do it again, but then lightning doesn't strike twice in the same place...or does it?

There was also some minor damage to the green but this will not interfere with our matches, although the damage to the bar area will certainly take some time and effort to rectify. Our owners have started the recovery plan to put things right but we can only apologize for any inconvenience caused to our visiting bowlers...the good thing is nobody got hurt!
