REGENERATING THE RAILWAY LINES

Torrevieja Railway Line

Nine municipalities across the Vega Baja have joined forces and asked for financial and technical assistance to convert the derelict railway lines into paths and green areas, similar to the one that comes out of Torrevieja.

Rojales had already tried to match the work of the former Torrevieja Railway line some 15 years ago, but the proposals were shelved. Now, the towns of Los Montesinos, Rojales, Algorfa, Almoradí, Catral, Daya Nueva, Dolores, Callosa de Segura and San Isidro have joined forces in the hope that a collective collaboration may have more success in creating and promoting an area that will become a unique facility for residents, whilst boosting the environmental impact and allowing the ecosystems to develop and thrive in a protected state.

The total cost of the combined project is estimated to be around 3 million euro, but the investment will allow for better connections between the towns, a new communication infrastructure and will be a selling point for both tourists and the Spanish Property sector in promoting the area.

Cycling, running, walking and other more mellow activities will all be promoted on the pathways, which will also be of benefit to the health of the people who use them. Not only that, it will connect the already established natural parks and help to stimulate the economy.

In total, there will be a stretch of 21 miles of greenway available, with other branches such as seating areas, which will be a haven of tranquillity on what was once a busy and bustling transport network.

It is also hoped that the scheme will create jobs for workers involved in activities such as lodgings, tour guides and maybe even restaurants, once the work is complete and the area becomes established once more as a site of beauty and natural growth.
