GAY PRIDE ORGANISERS SUED FOR FRAUD

Gay Pride Benidorm

The Benidorm based gay support group, Grupo de Amigos Gay de Benidorm, have filed a complaint with the courts for fraud, against the organisers of the first Gay Pride event and both the mayor of the city, Agustín Navarro and the councillor for tourism, Ángel Luis Ferrer.

It is alleged by the group that 8,500 euro raised by the event is being diverted towards a commercial entity for private beneficiaries, rather than the original intention of the fund raising, which was intended to benefit the gay community of Benidorm.

The president of the gay group, Juan Luis San Nicolás, states that the money raised was to go towards the construction of the first nursing home to be built in Spain, specifically catering for gay seniors, the “Fundación 26 de diciembre de Madrid”. Instead, it is claimed that the money raised has been diverted to a business based in Málaga and run by Javier Checa, who also organised the recent Gay Expo, which was run as a profit making operation for the business, rather than a charitable one.

The group also claim that the mayor and members of the city council were aware of these facts, making them accomplices in the alleged fraud.

The group has now demanded the return of the money, so that it can be put towards the charitable foundation that it was intended to help and that so many people gave generously to during the weekend event.
