The heat was on in the kitchen on Monday morning as the popular La Herradura Restaurant opened it kitchens to welcome budding chefs to battle it out to produce a new dessert for the restaurant's menu.

As intense and intimidating as that may sound, competitors Yvonne Goodfellow and Tony Wellstood insisted there was no Gordon Ramsey style pressure or shouting going on in there and despite their nerves were made to feel more than welcome by head chef Aurora Torres and her team who helped and encouraged the pair during their two-hour cook off.

Yvonne Goodfellow made her signature dessert of a lemon cheesecake after her husband suggested she go along and enter the competition. “I've enjoyed cooking for my family all my life and this cheesecake is really what I do when I have friends and family over and they all seem to like it.”

She continued, “They've been so lovely here and given us tips and shown us various things and its been really relaxed.” Both admit they have enjoyed the experience together and there has been no rivalry between the two.

Tony, from La Marina has only really been cooking for the last 2 years and it was his partner that suggested he entered the competition. “I thought 'I've got nothing to lose' and I've really enjoyed it.” It is only the second time Tony has produced his poached pear in red wine with chocolate sauce and it seemed to go down very well with the judging panel consisting of head chef Aurora Torres, Keeley Bunyan from Keeley's Cakes, Susan Reader from Paul Cunningham Nurses and La Herradura's Sommelier Francisco José Paredes Quesada.

They took some deliberation judging on cost, appearance, skill level and of course taste and there was just 2 points between the two with Yvonne's cheesecake being declared the winner with 107 points to Tony's 105. A very shocked and delighted Yvonne, from Entre Naranjos, will see her lemon cheesecake feature on the restaurant's menu for one month and can enjoy having it cooked by professionals as she and her husband enjoy a special winners meal.

Keeley Bunyan said it was unbelievably close and hard to call. The cake maker had been asked by the owner of La Herradura restaurant to be a judge and naturally took up the challenge. “It's nice to see people get involved in food and having that interest and supporting local restaurants and to have restaurants getting individuals involved. The facilities here are fantastic for contestants.”

If you think you have a winning dessert that is worthy of featuring on a restaurant menu then don't miss your chance as La Herradura is hosting the dessert competition each month with details to follow in the Leader on how and when to register.
