SPANISH HOME INSURANCE WITH COVER FOR EARTHQUAKES AND NATURAL DISASTERS

When insuring your property in Spain, there are a number of factors which you should consider as there are some characteristics of Spanish home insurance which differ from those of standard UK home insurance cover.

The first of these is the cover for earthquakes, natural disasters, flood, volcanic eruption, exceptional cyclonic storms, and the falling meteorites and other astral bodies, as well as events arising out of terrorism, riots or unpopular unrising, and deeds or actions of the Armed Forces or Security Forces during peacetime.

This is covered by the Consorcio which is provided in accordance with the terms of Spanish Law which created the Insurance Compensation Consortium (Consorcio de Compensacion de Seguros).

Generally terrorism is not covered in the United Kingdom as standard but is covered by the Consorcio in Spain.

Furthermore, Spain does not have the same subsidence problems as Britain as it's water table is much lower and the ground tends to be naturally dry. However when it comes to flooding, coastal areas of Spain have experienced problems over the last few years. In the Autumn and Winter months, cold air passes over the mountains and meets a build of warm humid air coming from the Mediterranean. The result can be heavy rainfall which lasts many days and has, in the recent past, caused severe flooding in parts of the Costa Blanca and Alicante.
