NEW BUS SERVICE TO LINK COAST WITH ORIHUELA

Martina says that without a car the journey has always been extremely difficult

Martina Scheurer, councillor for mobility and transport for Orihuela, has announced a project to provide a bus service between Orihuela city and Orihuela Costa.

For a long time many citizens of Orihuela Costa have been asking for a regular bus connection to the centre, which the new council totally agrees with, and we are convinced is necessary. Many people do not visit Orihuela, perhaps because of the distance, or the difficulty in finding a parking space, or maybe because Orihuela's charm is somehow hidden and not immediately visible.

Martina knows through her own experience, that when residents receive visitors, they frequently take them to visit Alicante, Elche or Cartagena, but seldom Orihuela.
We think that this can be changed.

We have planned a project to begin a weekly bus service, to be started in October for a trial period of 3 months, to determine the demand for such a facility. Our target is to offer to the citizens of Orihuela Costa a simple and easy way to reach the centre, without having to search for a parking space, and without the risk of getting lost.

The service would also offer the possibility of public transport to the city, for all of those who need to go to Orihuela - for example to the tax office, or to the social security office, or any other kind of office.

The service would take place each Tuesday, which is also when Orihuela has it's weekly market.

We are in touch with the department of tourism to explore the possibility of also offering a tourist guide on those days, to visit a small part of Orihuela's culture, with a weekly changing programme of visits.

We would like residents and tourists to walk through the historic centre, visit the shops or the market, see some of Orihuela's monuments, churches and museums and maybe stay for a cheap Menu del Día in one of the many small bars in the town, before the bus takes them back to the Coast.

We will soon publish the detailed proposal, and hope that it will be well received, so that we can include this in the budget for the coming year. We could then approach the Centre and the Coast to perhaps even increase to a daily service, if there is sufficient demand.

However, in a reflection of times gone by, the village of Entre Naranjos has been forgotten by the town hall planners, and it will not be served by the new service.

John Reynolds, the once appointed mayor and widely supported representative of the people of Entre Naranjos, albeit now largely also ignored by the new elected representatives of the Orihuela town hall, has started a campaign to open dialogue to try to get the bus to serve this popular, though now becoming increasingly ignored, urbanisation.

Mr Reynolds has arranged to speak to the town hall to try to get the matter resolved before the service starts.
