TORREVIEJA’S HABANERAS ENDS IN STYLE
Torrevieja's International Contest of Habanera and Polyphony is by far the most famous and best-known cultural event produced by the city. National TV and Radio teams, along with support from Torrevieja TV who stream proceedings on the Internet, were all in attendance. Habaneras is the one event from Torrevieja that is broadcast all around Spain on National TV and shown in many other countries of the world.
This year's 57th edition did not disappoint those that attended each and every night, in the historic setting of Eras de la Sal.
The 57th International Habanera Contest thrilled full houses of 1,600 spectators every night, as choirs from the Americas, Europe and Asia displayed their superb vocal talents singing the traditional Habanera. Blessed with splendid weather and a late start of 2300-hrs, the cool late night, Mediterranean breeze was an added bonus for the audience at each show.
There were also individual and local, out of competition performances, while the choir from Indonesia also danced and had a choreographed routine, which set them aside from most of the other choirs. An excellent ten days of music that, if you have never been to before, you should try and pencil into your diary for 2012!
This year, the President de la Generalitat, Alberto Fabra came specially to watch a performance along with the alcalde of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, the Presidente de las Cortes Valencianas, Juan Cotino; councillor for Culture and Tourism, Lola Johnson; the Councilor for Education, José Ciscar, Councilor for Health Luis Rosado, former mayor of Torrevieja Pedro Hernandez Mateo, members of the town council and an international audience of thousands.
