The 57th International Habanera Contest got underway in Torrevieja's Eras de la Sal on Saturday night, before a capacity crowd. The contest was formerly opened by the mayor Eduardo Dolon Sanchez who began by asking for a minute's silence for the victims of the day's attacks in Norway.
He then went on to congratulate the Technical Committee for the hard work in putting the competition together and concluded by welcoming to the city to all the choirs and other competitors that are participating in the week long event.
Following the opening ceremony, the Madrid television presenter and journalist Carolina Casado, who once again compered the opening night, introduced the 8 soloists competing in the second edition of the International Habaneras for soloists.
On the conclusion of the singing and the judging, the jury, of Francisco Grau Vergara, Jose Maria Agramunt Font de Mora, Eduardo Sanchez and Ana Maria Comas Montesinos, awarded the first prize of 3,000 euros to the Albacete soprano Myriam Arnouk Cerdá. She also won the public vote and a further euro 1,000.
A number of other outstanding performances from Inés de Arvizu, Rodrigo Jose Dominguez, Jesus Alvarez, Johana Simon, Gabriel Blanco, Nuria Garcia and David Mancebón, who were all masterfully accompanied on piano by Selena Cancino Escobar, were awarded a diploma of finalists.
On behalf of the Technical Commission, Pilar Paez said that the performance of the eight soloists was "brilliant," despite the cool breeze that blew steadily over the stage throughout the evening.
Following the solo competition there was a performance from the Youth Choir of the Torrevieja Municipal Choral School, under the direction of Selena Cancino Escobar.
