BIG BROTHER IS LISTENING TOO
At the end of this month, Local Police in Torrevieja hope to hit the streets with their latest technological advance to try to make the streets a safer and more tolerant place for all.
From previous issues of The Leader, you may already be aware of the network of CCTV cameras that protects the city, making it impossible to enter or leave, by road, without being recorded by the central monitoring unit.
Now, the network is developing further with the addition of a number of mobile cameras, most of which will also include listening equipment.
This next wave in crime fighting gadgets is aimed to allow police to monitor sound levels from bars and clubs, as well as nuisance noise caused by mopeds and motorbikes, in a hope that antisocial behaviour can also be brought under control quicker than ever before.
This is not the end however; the next stage is to bring in emergency help points, whereas a person can summon assistance at the push of a button, whilst protected by the camera network and the new listening devices.
The whole development is thought to have cost almost 2 million euro, but many residents feel that a price tag cannot and should not be put on developing networks that make living in the city a safer and quieter place.
