On a recent weekend visit Torrevieja U3A, together with U3A members from El Campello travelled north of Valencia and visited the historic towns of Onda and Sagunto.
In Onda which is situated in the area of Spain renowned for its important ceramics industry, the group toured the Museo del Azulejos (Tile Museum) info@museoazulejo.org . Uniquely the featured exhibition was of “700 years of English Tiles” which had been chosen to initiate a series of exhibitions presenting the history of tiles from other major tile-producing centres.
The remarkable complete tiled floor was a raised centrepiece of the exhibition: see picture.
Another floor of this new museum is dedicated to Spanish tiles with exhibits dating from the classical era to current times, with collections from the XIX and XX centuries being of particular interest. As one U3A member put it, “after visiting this amazing exhibition, we were floored”
The next day, following a walking tour of the historic areas of Onda, including a climb to the castle, the party moved on to Sagunto and visited the Roman ruins and castles dating back to the Arab occupation of the peninsular.
