The head of the current opposition part in Spain, Mariano Rajoy of the Partido Popular, has said that if his conservative party are voted into parliament at the next elections, he would repeal the law on same sex marriages, irrespective of what the voting public may vote for.
The law was first passed in 2005 in Spain, allowing same sex couples the legal right to marry. This is a step further than providing the facilities for couples to register their companionship, and provides equality to all.
Rajoy was quoted as having said “I don't like [same-sex] marriage and I believe it's not constitutional." He had also said that he would repeal the law, and in a more recent interview on radio, here-enforced his commitment to back track the law, emphasizing that it didn´t matter what the voting public thought. He made similar claims about the abortion law, but did state that he would put the latter point back to the vote.
The general elections in Spain are to take place in 2012, in the early part of the year. It may be too early to predict the outcome of the election, nor can it be taken as red who will head the parties in the build up to one of the most crucial years in modern Spanish history.
