COAST CELEBRATES DAY OF THE TREE
Children from the Scandinavian School in El Horizonte in Orihuela Costa were on hand to assist PP Councillor for the Coast, Jose Antonio Aniorte, last week during the celebrations for Day of the Tree.
Seventy saplings were planted during the event at the recreation area in El Horizonte. Members of the El Horizonte Petanca Club were also on hand to plant the saplings and they all enjoyed getting their hands dirty during the course of the activity. The Councillor also gave permission for an extra petanca piste to be built at the recreation centre and work on that should be commencing within the next few weeks.
This extra piste will be functional in time for the next large petanca competition due to take place later this year in which more than 100 players from clubs all over the Costa Blanca will participate.
Meanwhile, members of the German Association in Orihuela Costa also got their hands dirty during a tree planting exercise in La Zenia. One hundred saplings were planted on the green area on Calle Rocio on Thursday morning by the Councillor for the Coast, Jose Antonio Aniorte and eight members of the Association including the President, Norbert and the Vice President, Marlen.
The association meets every first Tuesday of the month at Milan´s in La Regia and every third Sunday of the month at Debasos in La Zenia. There are more than 100 members in the association which costs just €20 per year to join. Norbert explained why they were particularly keen to improve that plot of land.
He said: “We asked the Town Hall in Orihuela Costa to provide these trees as we hope that a park for the community can soon be developed on the site, a place where people can meet and spend their leisure time.” He added: “The association is keen to work closely with the PP run Town Hall to make this area and the coast in general a better place to live.”
The association has many ideas on how to improve certain areas on the coast and intend to donate their membership subsidies to those projecs, one of which includes the installation of a defibrillator at the new Coastal Sports Centre. They will decide on which projects that they want to donate to at their next meeting.
The association also gets sponsorship from various businesses in Orihuela Costa and the proceeds from that sponsorship will also go to funding the various projects that the association has earmarked.
