PARAMOUNT THEME PARK BOOST

So what will happen to the lifestyle of the people around the small village of Condado de Alhama

Paramount Pictures are due to open their brand new theme park in Murcia in the next couple of years but what does this mean for the people of Condado de Alhama?

It was confirmed last week that Paramount Pictures will be constructing its first Europe-based theme park on a 3.5 million sq mtr plot of land adjacent to the new Polaris World Golf Course at Condado de Alhama.

The leisure facility is being predicted to attract up to 3 million visitors a year, the vast majority from overseas, and as such the landmark decision will have a significant impact on both the people and prospects of the region.

The only doubts still to be overcome are the concerns regarding one of the main players in the deal, Jesus Samper, the President of local Football Club Real Murcia. Samper is currently in the middle of a court case in which he faces charges of corruption that will almost inevitably lead to internment if found guilty. However the Murcia businessman told the Spanish press that his legal situation should have no bearing whatsoever on the development of the Paramount Theme Park Project.

The land chosen to house the theme park was formerly owned by cash strapped developer Polaris World although it now belongs to a consortium of Spanish Banks. It is very close to the almost completed Murcia International Airport at Corvera and less than 30 minutes travel from the coast, the city of Murcia or indeed the flourishing port of Cartagena. The location is adjacent to an excellent motorway network and developers are in agreement that it seems to be the logical site for the development.

However the legal contracts are all still to be drawn up and until they are, and a number of minor problems not be ironed out, the alternative site of Fuente Alamo will remain as a distinct possibility.

The initial plot for the construction of the Paramount Theme Park and Paramount Spanish Property will be augmented with land covering a further radius of about a kilometre on which the developers will build additional services including hotels, banks, shops, supermarkets and restaurants, coupled with schools and health centres, spread across 9 million square metres of the Costa Calida.

Situated in one of the sunniest parts of Spain, the theme park will also provide about 20,000 new jobs. With Shrek, Pinocchio, Donkey and other Hollywood characters as neighbours there is likely to be a massive demand for holiday accommodation as families from across Europe flock to the area for theme park fun, golf and beaches.

“Murcia is bouncing back strongly,” said Fiona James, director of local estate agency Murcia Villas. “We are not back to the levels we were at 5 years ago, but the market is growing in strength and this theme park project is just another string to Murcia's bow.”
