MURCIA CITY AT 30KM/H
Murcia has joined ranks with many other Spanish cities which are reducing the speed limit in city centres to 30 kilometres an hour. Zaragoza was the first city to impose such a limit, and Valencia and Madrid followed the pattern.
The idea has many detractos, who believe cars cause more pollution when going at such a slow speed, and also use more petrol. Not to mention the beeps they get from other drivers who are unfamiliar with the new speed limit.
However, experts believe this reduced speed will save lives. Pedestrians are nine times more likely to die if hit by a car going 50 km per hour than 30 km per hour.
The Mayor of Murcia, Miguel Ángel Cámara, believes Murcia City should be a safe place for pedestrians above anything else, and that cars should not take priority.
