One man has died, a woman has been injured and emergency services were called out to deal with 322 incidents in the Comunidad Valenciana due to yesterday’s storms.

And a surfer has disappeared off the coast of Benicàssim (Castellón), but Red Cross boats were unable to find him.

The rain reached 57 litres per square metre per hour (approximately 5.7 centimetres, nearly two-and-a-half inches), particularly in coastal areas.

A man was killed and a woman taken to Castellón city hospital with severe bruising after a surfing hut fell on them on Burriana beach due to high winds, which accompanied the rain.

Emergency services have been called out to deal with 133 road accidents, as well as another 189 other incidents caused by the rain. In Alicante, the Vega Baja area in the south of the province and in Valencia, the L’Horta Nord area in the centre of the province were the worst-affected.

Various roads have been cut off or become gridlocked, including the A-3 just past Utiel, and the CV-86 between Alicante and Elche as well as several in Calpe, Benidorm, La Nucía and Elche.

A man had to be rescued after being trapped and another was cut off by floodwater, plus numerous properties have been damaged by wind, rain and lightning.
