Bombing of Torrevieja
The attack occurred on August 25th, 1938, in which 19 local people were killed. There is no record of the attack in the municipal archives, but it is a well documented act.
On August 25 1938 Italian aircraft based in the Balearic Islands launched a terrifying attack on the town. Numerous people died, and many more injured, including many innocent civilians, children, even babies. It has been described as a terrorist attack against civilians.
It seems that the aircraft deliberately hit a queue of people waiting outside the fish market and other bombs fell on homes and on a football pitch.
There have been many attempts to have a memorial built, mostly by the United Left party, but it is one of those Civil War attrocities that a lot of people would much sooner ignore.
The anniversary was marked by a poorly attended memorial by the Hombre del Mar statue in Torrevieja, at which a single red rose was put into the sea to mark the passing of each of the victims as their name was read aloud.
Representatives from the United Left party (Izquierda Unida) were present at the ceremony, but they were alone in representing this atrocity from a political faction, despite the still raw feelings by many of the sons and daughters of the town.
The victims were Capitán Miguel García Cuello (32), capitán Francisco Hernández Hernández (28), soldier Francisco Desamparado Moreno (22), Antonio Moreno Guardiola (32), Joaquina Antolinos Zapata (32), María Antonia Moreno Antolinos (10), Rafael Clemares Sala (35), Ángeles Cerezuela Guardiola (33), Ángeles Andréu Cerezuela (10), Manuel Andréu Cerezuela (11 months), Anastasio Blanco Ballester (12), Cayetano Sánchez Sanz (9), Francisco Desamparado Sánchez (2 months), María Quer Piorno (13), Mercedes Martínez Blesa (15), Josefa Alar Linares (61), Concepción Aracil Rives (22), Francisca Vidal Baños (22) and Rosario Alonso Mendiluces.
