SUPPORT FOR SUFFERERES OF MENTAL ILLNESS
Torrevieja City Council has renewed its arrangement with ADIEM (Association for the Protection and Integration of the Mentally Ill of the Vega Baja) to provide financial aid amounting to 50,000 euro, for at least another year thereby extending an agreement that has now been in place since 2004.
During the first 6 months of this year the additional finance provided by the council has enabled the organisation to provide support to over 750 mentally ill people in the region, a figure that will at least double by the end of 2010.
In September ADIEM moved its headquarters to a more modern structure in Calle La Paz, where it now employs 12 staff, in a building where the facilities are far more up to date, enabling it to serve more people and expand the programs and services it is able to offer to the general public.
The agreement was confirmed last Tuesday by the Mayor of Torrevieja, Pedro Hernandez Mateo, and the President of the Association ADIEM (www.adiem.org), Gertrude Marcos.
The group was originally formed in 1997 and at Tuesday’s ceremony Marcos said that in November it will be conducting a public awareness campaign through lectures and local meetings to make the public more aware of mental illness in the region and the importance of social integration for these mentally ill victims.
In addition, from 4 to 8 October, it will man an information kiosk in the town from which brochures and leaflets will be distributed on the occasion of Mental Illness World Awareness Day.
