EUROPEAN TITLE FIGHT BOUND FOR COSTA BLANCA
Great news for Spanish boxing with the announcement last Thursday that Irish Promoter Brian Peters has won the purse bid for the Vacant EBU Super Bantamweight Title fight between Daya Nueva’s Kiko Martinez and the Armenian Champion, boxing out of France, Arsen Martirosyan.
Kiko’s trainer Alberto Gonzalez was extremely upbeat about the whole thing following the announcement and has confirmed that the fight will be put on somewhere in the local area. The clash between the two biggest punchers in the bantamweight Division is also likely to attract television coverage with Eurosport already taking an interest.
Surprisingly Torrevieja is not in the reckoning as a venue which, with the fight expected to be shown in over 40 countries, will be disappointing to local fight fans. Best guess currently is Kiko’s home city of Alicante, where La Sensacion is guaranteed to pull in a large crowd.
Both fighters are known as big punchers so the match is unlikely to go the distance.
What is not known at this stage is whether Martirosyan, currently listed three places above Martinez in the European rankings, will also be putting up a defence of the WBC International super bantamweight crown that he won in Lyon recently against the previously undefeated French Champion Jeremy Parodi.
Although Gonzalez told the Leader that he would like to see the fight taking place in the heat of a sunny August evening to give his man the best advantage the most likely date would appear to be September.
